IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship Nice 2026 Preview: Geens and Charles-Barclay Defend Their Titles
Nice hosts the 2026 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship across two race days — women on Saturday 12 September, men on Sunday 13 September — with more than 140 professional triathletes on the start list, 3,000 Pro Series points and a $500,000 prize purse up for grabs as the penultimate stop of the IRONMAN Pro Series.
Women’s Race — Saturday 12 September
Defending champion Lucy Charles-Barclay headlines as she chases a third 70.3 world title. Three-time champion Taylor Knibb lines up as her closest rival on paper, in a field widely described as one of the strongest ever assembled for this race.
Men’s Race — Sunday 13 September
Seventy-two professional men take the start, headlined by two-time defending champion Jelle Geens, unbeaten across his two previous 70.3 World Championship starts (Taupō 2024 and Marbella 2025). He’ll face all three other living men’s champions in the field: Rico Bogen (2023), Kristian Blummenfelt (2022), and Gustav Iden (2019 and 2021) — a rare line-up of every recent title-holder on one start list.
The Course
The swim is 1.9km in the Mediterranean off Nice’s Baie des Anges. The 90km bike leg climbs steadily out of the city into the southern Alps foothills, tackling the Col de Vence — 9.7km at an average 6.6% gradient starting around the 26.6km mark — before a technical 11km descent back to the coast from roughly 64km. The run is a flat 21.1km, run as two out-and-back loops along the Promenade des Anglais.
