World Triathlon Competition Rules 2026: The Age-Grouper’s Essential Guide

World Triathlon publishes an updated competition rules document at the start of each season. The 2026 edition is available at the official World Triathlon website. This guide summarises the rules that affect age-group athletes most directly — drafting, wetsuits, transition, kit and penalty procedure — so you can race with confidence and avoid blue cards.

Drafting Zones

For non-drafting (age-group) triathlon, the rules specify:

  • Drafting zone: 10 metres directly behind the bicycle in front. You must not enter this 10m zone unless overtaking
  • Overtake time: once you enter the zone to overtake, you have 25 seconds to complete the pass and clear the zone
  • Side margin: 3 metres — you must stay at least 3m to one side if not drafting behind
  • Note on Ironman-branded events: IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 operate under their own rulebook, which specifies a 12-metre draft zone (not 10m). Always check the race briefing document for the specific rules that apply to your event

Wetsuit Rules

  • Mandatory below: World Triathlon mandates wetsuits when water temperature is below 20°C for elite athletes; for age-group events the cut-off varies — check your race briefing
  • Permitted up to: wetsuits may be worn up to 24.6°C for age-group athletes in most World Triathlon-sanctioned events
  • Thickness: maximum neoprene thickness of 5mm; suits with buoyancy aids are not permitted
  • Swimskins: non-neoprene swimskins are permitted in most events regardless of water temperature — check the race briefing to confirm

Kit and Uniform Rules

  • Sleeved kits: athletes may wear sleeves that extend above the elbow; sleeves must not cover the elbow itself. This rule applies across all distances
  • Front zips: age-group athletes (unlike elite athletes) may race with a front zipper of any length, provided it is fully closed in the final 100 metres before the finish line
  • Visible race number: must be worn at all times during the run segment. Number belts are permitted
  • Helmets: must be worn and fastened before unclipping the bicycle from the rack; must remain fastened until the bike is racked in T2

Transition Rules

  • Athletes must proceed directly from the swim exit to the bike rack and from the bike rack to the run start — no detours
  • Cycling shoes may be clipped to the pedals pre-race and at the mount line, but the athlete must be on foot until they cross the designated mount line
  • Any equipment left in transition (on the ground, not at your rack) may be penalised

Penalties

  • Blue card (drafting, blocking, conduct): athletes must stop at the designated penalty box and serve a time penalty (typically 2 minutes at Olympic distance; 5 minutes at 70.3 distance) before continuing
  • Red card: disqualification, typically for repeated violations or serious rules breaches
  • Outside assistance: receiving food, water or equipment from anyone outside of official race aid stations results in disqualification

Where to Find the Full 2026 Rulebook

The official World Triathlon Competition Rules 2026 document is available at triathlon.org. Always download the most recent version — rule updates are announced via the World Triathlon website and typically come into effect at the start of the season. If your race is an IRONMAN or IRONMAN 70.3 event, the IRONMAN Competition Rules document applies instead and is available via the IRONMAN website.
