WTCS Karlovy Vary 2026 Preview: Vilaca, Yee and Beaugrand Head to the Spa Town

The World Triathlon Championship Series moves to the Czech spa town of Karlovy Vary on 13 September 2026 for one of the toughest Olympic-distance courses on the calendar — a race regularly decided as much by the bike and run’s climbing as by raw swim speed.

Men’s Race

Series leader Vasco Vilaca (POR) heads the men’s field, with a third win of the season putting him in a commanding position heading into the Grand Final. Great Britain sends a strong contingent — Alex Yee, who posted the fastest male 10km run split in the Series this year (29:08), lines up alongside Connor Bentley, Jack Willis and Max Stapley. World U23 champion Oliver Conway (GBR), who owns the second-fastest 10km split of the year (29:36), is another name to watch off the back of the bike.

Women’s Race

Olympic champion Cassandre Beaugrand is the sole French entrant in the women’s field and will be racing the Karlovy Vary course for the first time. She’ll face last year’s podium finishers here — 2023 world champion Beth Potter (GBR) and 2025 world champion Lisa Tertsch (GER) — in what shapes up as a genuine title-picture race ahead of the Pontevedra Grand Final.

The Course

It’s a standard Olympic distance — 1.5km swim, 40km bike, 10km run — but the numbers undersell it. The swim is in Rolava Lake, the bike winds through Karlovy Vary’s cobbled historic centre with steep climbs and technical descents, and the run finishes on the town’s hilly streets. It’s widely regarded as one of the hardest Olympic-distance courses on the WTCS calendar, and it tends to reward strong bike-run athletes over pure swimmers.
