Ironman Race Week Accommodation and Travel Logistics Checklist

Book Earlier Than Feels Necessary

Popular Ironman and 70.3 races sell out host-city accommodation months in advance, and prices climb steadily the closer you book to race week. If you’ve got a confirmed race entry, book accommodation as soon as you know your travel dates rather than waiting until your training plan is finalised — you can always adjust or cancel later depending on the provider’s policy, but you can’t un-sell-out a fully booked hotel two weeks before the race.

Where to Stay Relative to the Course

  • Walking distance to transition — worth paying a premium for on race morning; a long, stressful walk or drive to transition before dawn adds avoidable friction to an already early start
  • Near the finish line — useful if your support crew wants to get back to base quickly post-race, though this is less critical than proximity to transition/start
  • Away from the main host-hotel cluster — sometimes cheaper and quieter for sleep in the nights leading into the race, if you don’t mind a slightly longer trip on race morning itself

Travelling With a Bike

  • Check airline bike policies and costs well before booking flights — they vary hugely and some carriers cap the number of bike bags per flight
  • Book a bike-friendly transfer (or hire a large enough vehicle) rather than assuming a standard taxi or rideshare car will take a bike box
  • See our full guide to travelling with your triathlon bike for packing and logistics specifics

Race Week Logistics Checklist

  • Registration and athlete briefing times — many races require in-person collection of your race pack, sometimes on a specific day
  • Bike drop-off and collection windows — often the day before the race and again after you finish, at fixed times you need to work around
  • Course recon — build in time to drive or ride sections of the bike course if you can, particularly technical descents or the run course’s aid station spacing
  • A realistic rest day before the race, with accommodation booked so you’re not still travelling into the host city 24 hours before the gun goes

Budgeting for Race Week

Race week costs add up well beyond the entry fee: accommodation for several nights, bike transport, race-week meals (often pricier in a tourist-heavy host town), and parking or transfers on race morning. Build a realistic race-week budget when you enter, rather than being surprised by the total cost closer to the day.
