IRONMAN Texas 2026 Race Preview: Pro Field, Course and Key Race Facts
Race Overview
IRONMAN Texas 2026 takes place on 18 April in The Woodlands, north of Houston, as the first major North American IRONMAN Championship of the season. With a $175,000 prize purse and championship status on the line, the field will be stacked with the world’s best long-course athletes chasing fast times on one of the circuit’s most forgiving courses.
Pro Field Highlights
The women’s race features British star Kat Matthews — runner-up at the 2023 IRONMAN World Championship and in brilliant early-season form. Taylor Knibb, fresh from a course record at IRONMAN 70.3 Oceanside, steps up to the full distance looking to add IRONMAN Texas to her growing palmares. Norwegian Solveig Lovseth completes a formidable top three on paper.
The men’s field is dominated by the Norwegian powerhouse trio: Kristian Blummenfelt, who broke the Oceanside 70.3 course record in March, alongside Gustav Iden and Casper Stornes. A one-two-three Scandinavian podium is a very real possibility on this flat, speed-friendly course.
The Course
- Swim (3.8km): Lake Woodlands, a calm reservoir with warm water and excellent visibility — expect fast swim splits
- Bike (180km): Flat, straight roads through the Texas Hill Country north of Houston; minimal climbing, perfect for aero riders
- Run (42.2km): The Woodlands Waterway trail — a shaded, spectator-lined out-and-back well suited to negative splitting
2026 Rule Changes to Know
IRONMAN’s new Global Competition Rules (effective 2 March 2026) introduce several changes relevant to Texas athletes. The pro draft zone increases from 12m to 20m. On-course photography and video recording is now banned under penalty of disqualification. Age-group athletes should note top-tube accessories are now capped at 10cm height. These rules apply at all IRONMAN events from 2026 onwards.
Weather and Racing Conditions
April in The Woodlands brings warm, humid conditions — typically 24-30 degrees Celsius with high humidity by mid-morning. Athletes should factor in pre-cooling strategies, disciplined on-bike hydration, and adjusted run pacing versus cooler weather targets. The humidity is a greater challenge than the heat for most Europeans racing here.
