WTCS Samarkand 2026 Preview: Everything You Need to Know About Triathlon’s Newest Host City

For the first time in World Triathlon Championship Series history, the elite racing circuit heads to Central Asia. On April 26, 2026, Samarkand, Uzbekistan hosts a WTCS event — a historic debut for a country and a region that has never before staged championship-level triathlon. Here’s everything you need to know before race day.

A Historic First for Triathlon

Samarkand is one of the oldest cities on the Silk Road, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the cultural capital of Uzbekistan. Its inclusion on the 2026 WTCS calendar is part of World Triathlon’s most ambitious programme expansion yet — a 10-race season that adds new host cities across multiple continents. Alongside Samarkand, the 2026 calendar also brings back London for the first time since 2015 and adds Quiberon, France as another new venue.

LA28 Olympic Qualifying Points on the Line

Like every WTCS race this season, Samarkand awards Olympic qualifying points toward the 2028 Los Angeles Games. Athletes who skipped Abu Dhabi or underperformed will be using Samarkand as an opportunity to claw back ground in the standings. This makes the start list as competitive as any race on the calendar — no one can afford to sit out.

Athletes to Watch

  • Kristian Blummenfelt (Norway): The Abu Dhabi winner comes in with unstoppable momentum after multiple wins in March and April
  • Taylor Knibb (USA): The women’s course record holder from Abu Dhabi will be looking for back-to-back victories
  • Alex Yee (Great Britain): The Olympic champion is building toward a big season, with LA28 a clear target
  • Hayden Wilde (New Zealand): One of the circuit’s most aggressive racers, always dangerous from the swim exit
  • Léonie Périault (France): The French athlete has been clocking blistering half marathon times in training and could challenge for the women’s podium

What to Expect from the Samarkand Course

Samarkand sits at around 700 metres above sea level with a continental climate — expect cooler, drier conditions compared to the humidity of Abu Dhabi. Spring temperatures in late April typically range from 15–22°C, which should suit runners and reward those who can run hard off the bike. The course layout will be confirmed closer to race day, but WTCS organisers typically design flat, spectator-friendly circuits through city centres.

How to Follow the Race

Live coverage of WTCS Samarkand will be available via World Triathlon’s official broadcast channels and the TriathlonLive platform. The men’s and women’s races typically take place across the same weekend, with both broadcast live online. Follow World Triathlon’s social media channels for start lists, athlete interviews, and post-race analysis.
