Triathlon Training and the Menstrual Cycle: A Practical Guide

Most triathlon training plans are written as if every athlete has an identical hormonal baseline every single day. For roughly half of triathletes, that’s simply not true — and understanding how the menstrual cycle interacts with training load, fuelling and recovery can make a real difference to how consistent (and comfortable) your training feels, even if the science on direct performance impact is more nuanced than headlines suggest.

The Two Phases That Matter Most

The cycle splits broadly into the follicular phase (roughly days 1-14, starting from the first day of your period) and the luteal phase (roughly days 15-28, following ovulation). During the follicular phase, oestrogen rises and many athletes report their best power output, sharpest recovery and highest training tolerance — a sensible window to schedule your hardest interval sessions or a key long brick. The luteal phase brings a drop in oestrogen and a rise in progesterone, often accompanied by fatigue, bloating, or mood changes for some athletes; training tolerance can dip in the early and late luteal phase specifically, which is worth planning around rather than pushing through.

Practical Adjustments Worth Making

  • Front-load your hardest sessions. If your cycle is predictable, schedule VO2max intervals, threshold bricks or a big long ride in the follicular phase, and keep the luteal phase’s lower-load days for endurance work or technique-focused sessions instead.
  • Increase carbohydrate intake in the luteal phase. Carbohydrate needs rise during the luteal phase, and that need increases further when you’re also doing endurance training on top — under-fuelling here compounds fatigue rather than easing it.
  • Track your own pattern, not the textbook one. The research is clear that cycle phase doesn’t reliably predict performance outcomes at a population level — what matters is your individual pattern. A few months of simple tracking (a training app note or a cycle-tracking app) will tell you more about your own response than any generic guide.
  • Plan race-week fuelling around where you’ll be in your cycle. If a key race lands in your luteal phase, build in slightly higher carbohydrate intake in the days before and adjust hydration expectations, since fluid retention and thermoregulation can shift across the cycle.

What the Evidence Actually Says

It’s worth being honest about the limits of the research here: systematic reviews of elite athlete performance across the menstrual cycle have found no consistent, reliable link between cycle phase and race-day performance outcomes. Symptoms and subjective training tolerance vary a great deal between individuals and even cycle to cycle for the same athlete. That doesn’t make the topic irrelevant — knowing your own pattern still helps you plan smarter training weeks and avoid being blindsided by a rough luteal-phase session — but it does mean you shouldn’t feel locked into a rigid phase-based plan if your own experience doesn’t match it.

When to Get Medical Support

Missed periods, unusually heavy bleeding, or symptoms that consistently derail training are worth raising with a GP or sports medicine practitioner rather than working around indefinitely — a missing or irregular cycle in an athlete training hard can be a sign of relative energy deficiency (RED-S) rather than something to simply push through.

Treat your cycle as useful context for planning your training week, not a rigid rulebook. Track your own pattern, front-load hard sessions when you tend to feel strongest, fuel a little more generously through the luteal phase, and get anything that feels genuinely off checked out rather than assumed normal.
