Garmin September 2026 Update: Voice Control, Run Coach Changes and Venu 4 Fall Detection
Garmin announced a round of free feature updates on 22 September 2026. They apply to the fenix 8 series, Forerunner 570, Forerunner 970, Venu 4 and vivoactive 6, plus compatible Edge cycling computers. The headline additions are hands-free voice control, changes to Garmin Run Coach and fall detection on the Venu 4.
What’s included
- Hands-free voice control (all five watches): say “Okay, Garmin” to start a timer, start an activity or turn on a compatible watch’s flashlight without touching the watch. You can also say “phone assistant” to reach your phone’s virtual assistant.
- Quick workouts (all five watches): workouts customised to your fitness level.
- Garmin Run Coach (all five watches): plans with run/walk options and adaptive daily adjustments.
- Indoor XC Ski (all five watches): activity tracking for compatible ski trainers.
- Fall detection (Venu 4 only): if the watch detects a hard fall it sends a message with your live location to your emergency contacts. It needs the watch paired to a smartphone over Bluetooth.
- Enduro ride profile (compatible Edge computers): switches automatically between climbing and descent modes.
What’s not stated
Garmin’s release doesn’t name the Edge models that get the Enduro profile, and it doesn’t give a rollout schedule or say whether older watches are included. The updates arrive automatically through Garmin Connect or Garmin Express. Garmin’s release mentions no subscription for any of the new features.
What matters for triathletes
The run/walk options in Run Coach suit athletes building back into running after a break, and the voice control is useful on the bike or in transition when your hands are busy. Fall detection is a safety feature for solo rides and runs, though it is limited to the Venu 4 in this update and depends on the phone connection. We have not tested any of the new features.
