Challenge Roth 2026: Everything UK Triathletes Need to Know
Challenge Roth 2026 sold out in just 28 seconds — faster than a Coldplay gig and arguably more coveted. If you missed the general entry window, don’t give up: the late entry ballot is still open, and this race deserves a place on every serious triathlete’s bucket list. Here’s everything UK athletes need to know.
What Is Challenge Roth?
Challenge Roth is a full-distance triathlon (3.8km swim / 180km bike / 42.2km run) held annually in Roth, Bavaria, Germany. Widely considered the fastest and most electric iron-distance race in the world, it regularly produces world records and attracts tens of thousands of spectators to its legendary Solar Hill cheering section. The 2026 edition takes place on 5 July 2026.
Why Is Challenge Roth So Special?
- Course records — The fastest times in iron-distance history have been set here. The flat, fast bike course and massive crowd support make it the benchmark for long-course performance.
- Solar Hill — A 2km crowd-lined stretch of the bike course where up to 250,000 spectators pack the roadside. Athletes describe it as unlike anything else in triathlon.
- Atmosphere — With 3,500 athletes and a festival atmosphere that turns the town into a celebration of endurance sport, Roth is more than a race — it is a cultural event.
- PTO Challenge Family merger — Following PTO’s acquisition of Challenge Family in 2025, Roth now benefits from expanded media coverage, prize money, and international star fields.

How to Get a Place
The general entry draw opens each autumn and closes in seconds. For 2026, registration is long closed — but there are still routes in. Challenge Roth offers a late entry ballot which provides at least 300 individual slots and 25 relay positions after the initial draw. Some charity and supported-entry programmes also offer race-day entries through their partners. Check the official Challenge Roth website for current availability.
What to Expect on Race Day
Challenge Roth is a fast course, but a very long day — expect 10 to 16 hours for most age-groupers. The bike course is largely flat with gentle rollers through the Bavarian countryside, ideal for time-trialling. The run is a two-loop course through Roth town centre with crowd support throughout. The swim is a point-to-point route along the Main-Danube Canal — typically wetsuit-legal and very fast. A dedicated 20-week training plan with heat acclimatisation built in for a July race is recommended for first-timers.
