Specialized Launches the Tarmac SL9: What Triathletes Should Know
Specialized officially unveiled the S-Works Tarmac SL9 on 30 June 2026, calling it “the fastest road bike ever made.” It’s not a triathlon bike, but the tech story is relevant to any triathlete who also races or trains on a road bike — and it’s already been raced by Red Bull–BORA–hansgrohe at spring training camps ahead of its public launch.
What’s New
- Frame weight: 687g claimed (size 56) — light enough that complete builds hit the UCI’s 6.8kg minimum weight limit with room to spare.
- Complete bike weight: From 6.5kg for the flagship aero-cockpit build.
- Aero gains: Specialized claims a 4-watt improvement at 45km/h versus the outgoing Tarmac SL8 — around 28 seconds saved over a 100km stage.
- Price: The S-Works Tarmac SL9 with SRAM Red AXS starts at £11,999 (size 56); a frameset alone is priced around €5,799.
Why It Matters Beyond Pro Racing
At £11,999, the SL9 isn’t a bike most triathletes will buy — but the aero and weight gains Specialized is claiming tend to filter down into cheaper models over the following one to two product cycles, the same way SL8-era aero tricks eventually reached mid-range framesets. If you’re training on a road bike between tri-specific sessions, it’s worth watching where this tech lands lower down the range rather than rushing to the flagship.
