T100 Gold Coast 2026: Knibb Takes Aim as Waugh Withdraws from Season Opener
The 2026 T100 Triathlon World Tour kicks off in Queensland with a significant shift in the women’s race. Defending champion Kate Waugh has withdrawn through injury, leaving the door wide open at the first World Tour race of the new season. Taylor Knibb enters as the clear favourite — and she will be difficult to stop.
Kate Waugh Out — Knibb the Clear Favourite
Waugh, who won the overall T100 World Tour title in 2025, had been expected to return to Gold Coast to begin her title defence. The British athlete’s withdrawal through injury removes the pre-season favourite from the equation entirely and significantly changes the women’s race dynamics.
Taylor Knibb — the 2024 T100 World Champion and reigning Olympic silver medallist — is now the overwhelming favourite heading into Sunday 22 March. Knibb’s ability to control races from the swim exit and exert sustained power on the bike makes her particularly dangerous on Gold Coast’s flat Esplanade course, where technical skill matters less than raw speed and endurance.
Race Details
The Gold Coast T100 women’s race takes place at 6:30am local time on Sunday 22 March on the Surfers Paradise waterfront. The course features a 2km ocean swim, a flat 80km bike leg on the Esplanade circuit, and a 10km run through the Gold Coast city streets. The event carries $275,000 USD in prize money — the highest single-race purse in professional middle-distance triathlon.
The men’s race takes place on Saturday 21 March. Both races are free to watch globally on TriathlonLive.tv — a new broadcast arrangement for 2026 that makes every T100 race accessible without a subscription.
Women to Watch
- Taylor Knibb (USA) — 2024 World Champion and Olympic silver medallist. Clear pre-race favourite following Waugh’s withdrawal. Expect Knibb to make the race hard from the bike.
- Georgia Taylor-Brown (GBR) — Former T100 champion and one of the sport’s most consistent performers. Will push Knibb hard on the run leg.
- Paula Findlay (CAN) — Veteran middle-distance racer in excellent form heading into the 2026 season opener.
- Laura Lindemann (GER) — Strong swim-biker who thrives on flat courses and could break away with Knibb on the Gold Coast Esplanade.
What the T100 Format Means for This Race
The T100 Triathlon World Tour operates under a single-gender format in 2026 — each race features either a men’s or women’s race, not both on the same day. Gold Coast hosts the women’s race on Sunday and the men’s race on Saturday. The prize money of $275,000 per race has been doubled from the 2025 season, making individual T100 events more lucrative than many IRONMAN 70.3 pro series races.
For UK triathlon fans, the next T100 race to watch on the calendar is the second round of the 2026 World Tour, with dates and locations to be confirmed as the season progresses. The full T100 World Tour schedule is available at t100triathlon.com.
