Oulton Park Spring Duathlon 2026: British Championships Preview
The UK Multisport Season Gets Underway
The 2026 British multisport season officially kicks off on Sunday 29 March at Oulton Park Motor Circuit in Cheshire. The Oulton Park Spring Duathlon brings together the best British and international duathletes in a sprint-distance draft-legal race that doubles as both the English Sprint Distance Duathlon Championships and a qualifying event for the World Sprint Distance Duathlon Championships.
Event Format and Course
The Sprint Duathlon distance covers a 4,300m run, a 21,600m cycle and a final 4,300m run. The iconic Oulton Park motor racing circuit provides a smooth, fast, closed-road cycling course that is ideal for draft-legal racing — making it a tactical affair where positioning in the pack is just as important as raw fitness. The first run takes place on the circuit itself, before athletes tackle the cycling loop and then return to the same run course for the second leg.
Why This Race Matters
- British Championships: This event serves as the British Sprint Distance Duathlon Championship — a prestigious national title up for grabs for elite and age-group athletes alike
- World qualifier: Top finishers in each age group earn qualification spots for the World Sprint Distance Duathlon Championships
- Season opener: After a long winter of indoor training, this is the first major opportunity for British multisport athletes to test their form in competition
- Para-duathlon: The event also incorporates a Super Sprint Paraduathlon, making it one of the most inclusive race days in the British calendar
How to Get to Oulton Park
Oulton Park Circuit is located near the village of Little Budworth, Cheshire (CW6 9BW), approximately 5 miles from Winsford and 13 miles from Chester. The nearest train station is Winsford (roughly 5 miles away), and there is ample parking on site. Start time is 08:00 on Sunday 29 March 2026 — expect road closures around the circuit during racing.
Tips for Racing Oulton Park
- Transition practice: With draft-legal cycling, transitions need to be slick — practice T1 and T2 in the week before the race
- Pack riding skills: Draft-legal format rewards those comfortable riding in a group at speed — work on this in training
- Warm up on the circuit: Arrive early to walk or jog the run course and get a feel for the circuit surface
- Pacing the run legs: With two run legs, it is easy to go out too fast on the first — hold back 5% and save it for the finish
- March weather: Late March in Cheshire can be cold and wet — bring layers for the start and transition
