Sweat Testing for Triathletes: Is It Worth the Cost?
Sweat testing has moved from elite-lab curiosity to something age-group triathletes can actually book, but the data behind it is more useful than the marketing around it suggests. Here’s what the research actually shows, and whether it’s worth paying for.
Why Sweat Sodium Loss Varies So Much Between Athletes
Sweat testing databases show sweat sodium concentration ranging from roughly 200mg to over 2,300mg per litre of sweat — more than a ten-fold difference between the lowest and highest losers. That’s the core argument for individual testing: a generic electrolyte strategy built for an average loss rate can badly under- or over-shoot what you personally need. Research on elite triathletes has also found that men typically show both greater total sweat sodium loss and a greater rate of loss than women, which matters if you’re following a training partner’s fuelling plan rather than your own data.
Is Your Sweat Sodium Rate Fixed, or Can You Change It?
Sweat sodium concentration has a strong genetic component, linked to how efficiently your sweat ducts reabsorb sodium before it reaches the skin. Pilocarpine sweat testing — the standard method — is test-retest stable, with a coefficient of variation of only around 5.5% across repeated tests in trained athletes, so a single test result is a reasonably reliable baseline rather than a one-off snapshot. That said, it isn’t entirely fixed: structured heat acclimation protocols have been shown to reduce sweat sodium concentration by roughly 15-25 mmol/L in previously unacclimatised athletes, which is one reason a test done in early-season UK conditions may not fully reflect what you’ll lose racing somewhere hot later in the year.
What a Sweat Test Actually Tells You
- Your personal sodium concentration — where you fall on that 200-2,300mg/L range, rather than assuming you’re “average.”
- A starting point for race nutrition — a baseline sodium replacement target per litre of fluid, which you then adjust for heat, race duration and how you tolerate different products.
- Whether you’re a “salty sweater” — visible white salt residue on kit after training is a rough proxy, but a lab test quantifies it rather than leaving you guessing.
What It Doesn’t Tell You
A single test is a snapshot taken under one set of conditions — temperature, intensity, heat acclimation status and hydration level on the day all affect the result. It also doesn’t account for gut tolerance: two athletes with identical sweat sodium losses can have very different tolerances for how much sodium they can actually absorb per hour without GI distress. Treat a sweat test as a starting number to refine through real training and racing, not a fixed prescription. Independent, peer-reviewed validation of some newer at-home testing methods is still going through publication as of 2026, so it’s worth asking a provider what method they use — lab-based pilocarpine testing has the strongest evidence base.
Is It Worth the Cost?
If you’ve had cramping, salt residue you can’t explain, or you’re stepping up to your first 70.3 or full-distance race where hours of sodium loss compound, a one-off test is a reasonable investment to replace guesswork with a number. If you’re racing sprint or Olympic distance in the UK’s typically mild conditions and haven’t had hydration problems, a standard electrolyte drink at a moderate concentration is probably fine without paying for a test. Where it pays off most is heat-acclimation training ahead of a hot-weather A-race — retesting after a structured heat block lets you see whether your acclimation protocol is actually working, rather than assuming it is.
