Race Day Checklist: Everything a Triathlete Needs to Pack

Race day is not the time to discover you've forgotten something essential. A methodical packing routine eliminates last-minute panic and lets you focus entirely on performance. Whether you're lining up for a sprint or an IRONMAN, this checklist covers every item that belongs in your transition bag.

Swim Gear

  • Wetsuit (check temperature — wetsuits are legal below 24.6°C in competition)
  • Goggles (bring a spare pair)
  • Swim cap (race-provided, but bring your own as backup)
  • Anti-chafe lubricant (neck and wrist seals)
  • Earplugs (optional for cold open water)

Bike Gear

  • Helmet (mandatory — must be on before you touch the bike)
  • Cycling shoes and socks
  • Sunglasses
  • Bike computer or GPS watch
  • Two full water bottles or aero bottle
  • Nutrition (gels, bars, chews for your planned fuelling strategy)
  • CO2 inflators or pump, spare tube, and tyre levers

Run Gear

  • Race shoes (laced with elastic laces for fast T2)
  • Race belt with number attached
  • Running cap or visor (sun protection)
  • Extra gels or chews for the run
  • Socks (optional if you train without them)

Transition Area Must-Haves

  • Towel (for wiping feet before running shoes)
  • Race number stickers for helmet and bike
  • Timing chip and ankle strap
  • Small bag for goggles and swim cap after the swim

Pre-Race Essentials

  • Race briefing confirmation (print or screenshot)
  • Pre-race nutrition (banana, rice cakes, or your usual race morning meal)
  • Electrolyte drink or sachets
  • Sunscreen (apply before wetsuit)
  • Phone and car keys (stored securely, not in transition)
  • Warm layers for pre-race (transition areas can be cold at dawn)

Packing Tips

  • Use your transition bag the night before — pack it fully, then double-check in the morning
  • Keep swim, bike, and run items in separate sections or bags
  • Attach your race belt to your bike shoes the evening before to save time in T2
  • Write a physical checklist and tick each item as it goes in the bag
  • Set a bike check alarm — many races require bikes to be racked the day before
