LA28 Olympic Triathlon Qualification: Everything You Need to Know
Los Angeles 2028 is now firmly in the sights of the world’s top triathletes. The LA28 Olympic triathlon qualification cycle officially opened in June 2026 with the World Triathlon Championship Series Abu Dhabi — now postponed to a later date — meaning Samarkand on 26 April has become the first race where meaningful qualification points are accumulated. Here is everything you need to know about how athletes qualify for LA28.
How Qualification Works
Olympic triathlon qualification for LA28 is primarily points-based, running through the World Triathlon Championship Series and World Cup circuit. Athletes accumulate points across a defined qualification window, with the top-ranked athletes from each National Olympic Committee securing automatic berths. Each country is limited to a maximum of three athletes per gender in the Olympic event.
Key Qualification Races
- WTCS Samarkand (26 April 2026) — first race with LA28 points counting, following Abu Dhabi postponement
- WTCS Yokohama — historically one of the most competitive WTCS rounds, typically May
- WTCS Alghero — European round, typically June
- WTCS London (25–26 July 2026) — home race for British athletes, back on the calendar for the first time since 2015
- WTCS Grand Final, Pontevedra — season-closing race worth double points
- World Cups — lower points value but additional qualification opportunities for athletes outside the WTCS elite
Key British Athletes Targeting LA28
Men: Alex Yee (GBR), Paris 2024 silver medallist and two-time world champion, is the clear favourite for a British men’s spot. Jonny Brownlee’s return to elite racing adds interest to the men’s selection picture, while strong age-group talent continues to emerge through the British Triathlon pathway.
Women: Beth Potter, Jess Learmonth and Georgia Taylor-Brown give Great Britain exceptional depth. All three are credible Olympic competitors, but only three women can qualify per nation — making British selection one of the most competitive in world triathlon.
Mixed Relay and Para Triathlon
LA28 will again feature the mixed relay event, where teams of two men and two women race in alternating legs. Great Britain are reigning Olympic mixed relay champions (Paris 2024) and will be defending their title. Para triathlon also features at LA28 across multiple classification categories. The full LA28 Para triathlon qualification pathway will be announced by World Para Triathlon in 2026.
When Will Athletes Qualify?
The full LA28 Olympic qualification window runs through 2026 and 2027, with final qualification positions confirmed in mid-2028 ahead of the Games. The qualification process is complex and involves both World Triathlon rankings and National Olympic Committee selection criteria. Athletes will be monitoring their rankings closely after every race from Samarkand onwards.
