LA28 Qualification Window is Open: What UK Triathletes Need to Know

The Olympic qualification window for the 2028 Los Angeles Games officially opened on 18 May 2026, marking the start of a two-year competition for spots in the triathlon events at LA28. With 55 men’s and 55 women’s quota places available globally, the race for Olympic selection is already underway at every WTCS and Championship race from WTCS Alghero onwards.

How Does LA28 Triathlon Qualification Work?

Olympic qualification for LA28 triathlon is governed by World Triathlon‘s Olympic Qualification System (OQS), which awards ranking points at WTCS events, World Championship races, and Continental Championships between May 2026 and the cut-off in spring 2028. Athletes must meet a minimum performance standard, and their National Olympic Committee must confirm acceptance of the quota place.

  • Individual quota: 55 men and 55 women qualify via the individual Olympic Qualification Ranking (OQR)
  • Host nation: Team USA earns automatic spots via host nation berths — these do not consume OQR quota
  • Continental representation: Minimum one athlete per continental zone is guaranteed a place
  • Mixed relay: Separate qualification process for the mixed relay event at LA28

Which Races Award LA28 Qualification Points?

Points are awarded at WTCS races, World Cups, and major Championship events. Higher-prestige races carry more points. The full 2026 WTCS season — Alghero, Yokohama, Quiberon, Hamburg Mixed Relay, London, Weihai, Karlovy Vary, and the Grand Final in Pontevedra — all provide qualifying points. Points accumulate across multiple seasons, so consistent racing over 2026 and 2027 is the route to a strong ranking.

British Athletes in Contention for LA28

Great Britain has a remarkable Olympic triathlon history — from Alistair and Jonny Brownlee’s dominance at London 2012 through to Georgia Taylor-Brown’s silver at Tokyo. For LA28, Taylor-Brown remains the standout British women’s contender after her T100 Spain 2026 win and strong WTCS form. The men’s picture is more open, with a generation of young British athletes now competing at WTCS level following the Brownlee era.
