IRONMAN 70.3 Bolton 2026 Race Week Preview: Course Guide, Tips & What to Expect

Race week has arrived for IRONMAN 70.3 Bolton — the first event of the 2026 IRONMAN England season. With race day falling on Sunday 7 June at Pennington Flash, Greater Manchester, here is everything you need for a smooth, well-prepared race day. The event sold out once again, reflecting its reputation as one of the most atmospheric half-iron events on the UK calendar.

Race Weekend Schedule

The full race weekend runs from Thursday 4 June through Sunday 7 June. Athlete registration, check-in, and mandatory briefings take place across Thursday to Saturday. Race day features a self-seeded rolling start from Pennington Flash Nature Reserve. Check your athlete guide and the official IRONMAN app for precise wave start times, transition opening hours, and bike racking windows.

Swim: Pennington Flash (1.9km)

The 1.9km swim takes place in the sheltered waters of Pennington Flash Nature Reserve — a well-regarded open water venue that typically provides flat, calm conditions. June water temperatures usually sit between 15–18°C, making a wetsuit likely to be permitted. Confirm wetsuit legality at the official athlete briefing. Get into the water early for a short acclimatisation swim before your wave starts — even two minutes in the water beforehand significantly reduces the shock response and steadies your breathing for the first buoy turn.

Bike: 90km with 840m Elevation

The bike course is a legitimate northern England challenge — rolling and punchy rather than mountainous, with 840 metres of total elevation gain spread across four loops. Athletes complete two initial loops through Lowton, Abram, and Bickershaw before two further loops around Horwich and Bolton. The key climb on Victoria Road and Old Kiln Lane is the defining section of the course and punishes riders who went too hard on the early flat sections. Aim for a steady Zone 3 effort (RPE 6–7) on the climbs rather than going full gas. Save your legs for the run — every Bolton veteran says the same thing.

Run: Queen’s Park to Bolton Town Hall (21.1km)

The 21.1km run begins in Queen’s Park and heads through Bolton’s historic town centre to a red-carpet finish outside the iconic Town Hall — one of the most atmospheric finish lines in UK triathlon. The course is largely flat and spectator-friendly. Use the noise from the Bolton town centre crowds to push through the mid-race tough patch, typically around 13–15km. Prioritise hydration at every aid station and hold back slightly in the first 3km as your legs transition from bike to run.

5 Race-Week Tips for Bolton 70.3

  • Know the split transition layout — Transitions at Bolton are split between Pennington Flash (T1) and Queen’s Park (T2). Walk each transition area during registration day so there are no surprises on race morning.
  • Pace the bike by effort, not ego — The first loop feels easy. Do not let it tempt you into going above your target power. Ride the full four loops at 70–75% FTP and you will run well.
  • Test your wetsuit this week — If you haven’t swum in your wetsuit recently, do a short session in it before Sunday to confirm the fit and practise removal in under 60 seconds.
  • Finalise your race nutrition plan today — Work out exactly how many gels and how much fluid you need for 90km and 21.1km. Test nothing new on race day.
  • Prioritise Thursday and Friday sleep — Race-eve nerves are normal. The sleep you accumulate earlier in the week is what sustains your performance on Sunday.

Good luck to every athlete racing IRONMAN 70.3 Bolton this weekend. For all enquiries about 2027 entry, add your name to the waitlist early — this event fills within hours of opening.
