IRONMAN 70.3 Bolton 2026 Results: A Challenging UK Race Day

IRONMAN 70.3 Bolton returned to Pennington Flash on Sunday 7 June 2026 for another edition of one of the UK’s most demanding middle-distance events. With its undulating bike course through the hills of the West Pennine Moors and a challenging multi-lap run through Bolton, it once again proved to be one of the toughest 70.3 tests on the British calendar.

Race Conditions

Race day brought testing conditions to Greater Manchester. Athletes and coaches described the course as one with “nowhere to hide” — demanding fitness, pacing discipline, and mental resolve across the 1.9km swim in Pennington Flash, the 90km bike through exposed Lancashire roads, and the 21.1km run. Strong headwinds on the open bike course made pacing critical, rewarding athletes who stayed patient and saved their legs for the run.

Age-Group Highlights

The UK age-group field produced excellent performances across the board. In the women’s race, Anna Birrell claimed 2nd overall and topped the F25-29 age group, while Laura Gray finished 3rd overall female and 2nd in F30-34. The M45-49 category was won by Chris Standidge with a 3rd overall men’s finish — a strong performance in one of the most competitive male age groups at any UK 70.3 event. Tony Clarke dominated M55-59.

First-time 70.3 finishers completed the course in significant numbers, with the Bolton community providing strong support along the route. For many age-group athletes, this race serves as a key qualifier and early-season benchmark ahead of IRONMAN UK in July and 70.3 Weymouth in September.

The Course

Pennington Flash provides a scenic open-water swim start in a well-managed lake environment. The 90km bike leg heads into the West Pennine Moors, featuring significant climbing and long exposed stretches that punish athletes who go out too hard. The run takes athletes through Bolton town centre and surrounding roads in a multi-lap format that tests fatigue resistance — and resolve — over the final kilometres.

What’s Next for UK Long-Course Racers

With IRONMAN 70.3 Bolton complete, the next major UK long-course event is IRONMAN UK Bolton — the full-distance race on 19 July — using the same challenging roads and demanding atmosphere. IRONMAN 70.3 Weymouth follows on 20 September, offering a faster coastal alternative for athletes targeting a late-season PB. For full official results, visit the official IRONMAN results page.
