Continuous Glucose Monitors for Triathletes in 2026: What Replaced Supersapiens
If you looked into continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) for training a couple of years ago, the name you’ll remember is Supersapiens — and it’s worth knowing upfront that Supersapiens shut down in early 2024, cancelling all memberships and stopping sensor shipments. If you’re considering a CGM for training now, here’s what actually still exists and what changed.
What Happened to Supersapiens
Supersapiens built its sports-focused app on top of Abbott’s Libre Sense Glucose Sport Biosensor, and the company cited “an increasingly challenging business environment” when it terminated all memberships and stopped shipping sensors in early 2024; a major limiting factor was that Supersapiens was never approved to operate in the US or Canada, cutting off most of its potential market. The app stopped working entirely by the end of March 2024.
What Replaced It
Abbott — the sensor manufacturer Supersapiens depended on — launched its own consumer product, Lingo, after Supersapiens closed. Lingo uses Abbott’s own biosensor hardware directly rather than licensing it to a third party, and pairs it with an app aimed at general glucose-spike awareness, sleep, mood and energy rather than sport-specific training metrics. Levels, a separate US-based metabolic health app that also builds on Abbott’s Libre sensor family, remains another option if you want glucose data alongside broader diet and lifestyle tracking rather than a training-specific tool.
Neither Lingo nor Levels is currently marketed specifically at endurance training the way Supersapiens was — if you’re looking for exercise-specific glucose insights (fuelling timing, bonk prediction, race-day pacing), you’re working with general-purpose tools rather than a sport-built platform, and should expect to do more of your own interpretation.
Is It Actually Useful for Training?
Worth being honest about the limits here. A 2022 study in the International Journal of Sports Physiology and Performance tested the accuracy of Abbott FreeStyle Libre sensor data (the same sensor family behind Supersapiens, Lingo and Levels) during exercise and found a large degree of error, which got worse with carbohydrate intake during exercise — precisely the moments a triathlete would most want accurate data. That doesn’t make CGM data useless, but it means treating it as a rough trend indicator rather than a precise number to fuel decisions around, especially mid-session.
Should You Bother?
If you’re chasing marginal fuelling gains and already have your core nutrition strategy dialled in through trial and error, a CGM can add genuinely useful context on how your body responds to different carbohydrate sources and timing outside of training too. If you’re still working out basic race nutrition, a structured practice approach — using your long rides and bricks to test gels, drink mixes and timing — will move the needle further for less cost and complexity than strapping on a sensor with known accuracy limitations during exercise.
