Creatine is one of the most researched supplements in sports science, and its benefits for strength and power athletes are well established. For triathletes, the picture is less clear-cut — it’s not an endurance supplement in the way a carb gel is, but that doesn’t mean it has no place in a triathlete’s training. Here’s what’s actually worth knowing before you add it to your routine.
What Creatine Actually Does
Creatine monohydrate increases the amount of phosphocreatine stored in muscle, which fuels very short, high-intensity efforts — think sprint finishes, hill surges, or repeated hard accelerations, not steady zone 2 riding. Its best-established benefits are in strength training: more reps at a given load, better recovery between sets, and modest gains in lean muscle mass over time.
Where It Might Help a Triathlete
- Strength training days: if you lift as part of your programme, creatine’s strength benefits transfer directly.

The Trade-Off Triathletes Should Know
Creatine pulls water into muscle cells, and most users see a small increase in body mass — commonly cited as somewhere in the 1-2kg range during the first few weeks. For a strength athlete that’s irrelevant or even useful. For a triathlete carrying that extra weight up a hill or through a marathon leg, it’s a genuine consideration, and part of why creatine hasn’t become a default supplement in endurance sport the way it has in strength sport.

If you’re purely endurance-focused, chasing race weight, or racing very long course where every gram matters on the run, the case is much weaker. As with any supplement, check with a doctor if you have kidney concerns, and treat it as a small edge on top of good training and nutrition — not a substitute for either.
