IRONMAN 70.3 Valencia 2026: Race Preview, Course Guide and Key Contenders
IRONMAN 70.3 Valencia returns for its third edition on Sunday 19 April 2026, and this year’s race is the most high-profile edition yet. All 3,000 amateur places sold out months in advance, and the professional field is headlined by 2023 IRONMAN World Champion Sam Laidlow making his first-ever IRONMAN 70.3 start. Here’s everything you need to know about the race, the course, and the key contenders.
Race Overview
IRONMAN 70.3 Valencia covers the standard half-iron distance: 1.9km swim, 90km bike, and 21.1km run. The total cut-off is 8 hours 30 minutes. Finishers earn qualifying slots for the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Nice, France later in the season, with a $40,000 professional prize purse on offer.
Course Guide
Swim: The 1.9km swim takes place in the sheltered Marina de Valencia. Water temperature in mid-April averages around 15–16°C — comfortably within wetsuit-legal range. Conditions are typically calm with minimal chop, making this one of the faster swim courses on the European 70.3 calendar.
Bike: The 90km bike course starts from the marina and heads through Valencia’s streets before climbing towards the Sierra Calderona foothills and returning to the city. Total elevation is approximately 180m — mostly flat with some rolling sections on the outward leg. Powerful, aero-efficient cyclists will excel here. Sam Laidlow holds bike course records at both IRONMAN Nice and IRONMAN 70.3 Nice — a Valencia course that rewards big power is very much in his wheelhouse.
Run: A flat, four-loop run through central Valencia, finishing in front of the iconic Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias. Expect fast run splits from the elite field — and a spectacular finish-line atmosphere from the city’s passionate crowd.
Key Contenders
Men: Sam Laidlow (FRA) arrives as the most anticipated debutant in European 70.3 racing this spring. The 2023 IRONMAN World Champion is a dominant biker and an improving runner, though the half-iron format — particularly the faster run pace — will be new territory for him. Spanish athletes Nacho Galvez, Sergio Lopez, Damian Martinez, and David Blasco bring home-course knowledge and strong local support. Marjolaine Pierre’s husband and fellow professional, Thibault Bringaud, is also expected to feature.
Women: Lena Meissner (GER), the 2025 IRONMAN 70.3 European Champion, heads the women’s start list. She’ll face serious competition from Marjolaine Pierre (FRA), who won IRONMAN 70.3 Aix-en-Provence in 2025, and Imogen Simmonds (CHE), a consistent top-five performer across the European 70.3 circuit.
