WTCS Samarkand 2026 Preview: The Season Opener in Uzbekistan

With the WTCS Abu Dhabi races postponed due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, WTCS Samarkand on 26 April has been elevated to the role of 2026 World Triathlon Championship Series season opener — and it promises to deliver an explosive start to what should be a landmark year in elite triathlon.

Race Details

  • Date: 25-26 April 2026 (elite racing on the 26th, live on TriathlonLive)
  • Location: Samarkand, Uzbekistan
  • Format: Standard distance, draft-legal
  • Significance: Season opener; first LA28 Olympic qualification points awarded

Women’s Race: Taylor-Brown’s Return

The women’s start list features one of the most anticipated returns of the season: Georgia Taylor-Brown, the 2020 Olympic silver medallist, is back competing at standard distance WTCS events. Taylor-Brown is one of Britain’s finest ever triathletes, and her presence at Samarkand will immediately raise the competitive stakes.

She faces world-class opposition from France’s Cassandre Beaugrand and Léonie Périault, as well as a strong German contingent including Lisa Tertsch, Tanja Neubert, Nina Eim, and Annika Koch. The women’s race looks wide open.

Men’s Race: Defending Champion Returns

On the men’s side, Maxime Hueber-Moosbrugger of France returns to defend his Samarkand title from 2025 — a significant test against a field that includes Brazil’s Miguel Hidalgo and Swiss athlete Max Studer.

American legend Gwen Jorgensen is also targeting Samarkand — she is aiming to race around her 40th birthday, which would make for a remarkable storyline if she can challenge at the front of the field.

LA28 Qualification Context

With the LA28 Olympic qualification cycle now open, every WTCS race carries major strategic importance. Athletes who perform consistently across the 10-race 2026 season will build the ranking points needed to secure their Olympic spots. Samarkand being the first race of the season means results here will set the tone for qualification campaigns.

Following Samarkand, the WTCS season continues with Yokohama (16 May), before a packed summer schedule that includes the London races in July — always a highlight for UK triathlon fans.
