Triathlon’s Pro Draft Zone Finally Aligned: IRONMAN and Challenge Roth Join T100 at 20 Metres for 2026
For 2026, all three major professional long-course triathlon series — the IRONMAN Pro Series, Challenge Family’s DATEV Challenge Roth, and the Professional Triathletes Organisation’s T100 Triathlon World Tour — are racing pros to the same 20-metre draft zone on the bike. It closes a gap that’s existed for years between the series, though it only applies to professional fields; age-group racers still draft at 12 metres across all three.
What Changed, and Where
The IRONMAN Group raised the professional draft zone from 12 metres to 20 metres across its 2026 Pro Series races, part of its published 2026 Global Competition Rules that took effect from 2 March 2026. Professional athletes now have a maximum of 45 seconds to complete a legal pass; the age-group draft zone is unchanged at 12 metres.
DATEV Challenge Roth, organised under Challenge Family, separately confirmed it would increase its professional drafting distance to 20 metres for the 2026 race — explicitly framed by the organisers as a trial limited to the pro field, with the age-group draft zone left unchanged.
The PTO’s T100 Triathlon World Tour has raced its pros at a 20-metre draft zone since 2023, enforced with RaceRanger distance-tracking technology — the same technology now supporting enforcement at IRONMAN and Challenge Roth’s pro races in 2026.
Why the Change
Challenge Roth’s own release points to how much faster professional bike splits have become since the race’s early-2000s editions — cycling times there have dropped by almost 30 minutes over that span — which shrinks the real-world drafting benefit of a fixed 12-metre gap between fast-moving riders. A Pro Tri News survey cited in the same release found more than 85% of the elite athletes surveyed were in favour of moving to 20 metres.
What It Means for Age-Groupers
Nothing changes for age-group racing — the draft zone stays at 12 metres across IRONMAN, Challenge and T100 age-group fields. This is a professional-field rule only, though if you’re spectating or following the pro race at any of these events, it’s worth knowing the distance you’re watching officials enforce has moved.
