Racing in Humidity vs Dry Heat: Why Your Pacing and Fuelling Need to Change

“It’s hot” isn’t specific enough to plan a race around. A 30°C day in the Arizona desert and a 30°C day in Florida or Singapore are physiologically different races, because the mechanism your body relies on to cool itself — evaporating sweat off your skin — works very differently depending on how much moisture is already in the air around you.

Why Humidity Changes the Equation

Sweating only cools you down when the sweat actually evaporates off your skin. In dry heat, the air can absorb a lot of moisture, so sweat evaporates efficiently even at high temperatures — you might feel constantly damp with sweat but your body is genuinely shedding heat. In humid conditions, the air is already close to saturated with moisture, so sweat has nowhere to go: it drips off you unevaporated, providing little to no cooling, while your core temperature keeps climbing. This is why a “cooler” humid race can feel — and physiologically be — more dangerous than a hotter dry one. Wet-bulb temperature (a measurement that accounts for both heat and humidity) is a far better predictor of heat stress risk than air temperature alone, which is why some race organisers now use wet-bulb thresholds rather than simple temperature cut-offs to modify or cancel events.

Pacing Differently for Each

In dry heat, your main limiter is often fluid loss — you can sweat heavily and still cool effectively, but you need to replace what you’re losing or you’ll run into dehydration-driven pace collapse late in the race. Steady, proactive hydration from early on tends to be the priority. In humid heat, the limiter is core temperature itself rather than fluid balance alone — your pace needs to come down earlier and more deliberately, because no amount of drinking fixes a cooling system that physically can’t evaporate sweat fast enough. Fuelling and Hydration Adjustments

Where they differ is in what to prioritise if you can’t do everything: in dry heat, err toward more fluid volume since you’re losing more through efficient evaporation; in humid heat, prioritise external cooling — ice, cold sponges, pouring water over your head and neck at aid stations — since internal cooling from drinking alone often can’t keep pace with core temperature rise when sweat isn’t evaporating. Practising your specific race-day conditions in training, not just “heat” in the abstract, is the single best preparation — a few sessions in genuinely humid conditions (a warm indoor space with poor airflow, or simply timing outdoor sessions for the muggiest part of the day) teach your body what dry-heat acclimatisation alone won’t.
