Triathlon Wetsuit Rules: Water Temperature Limits Explained

Why Wetsuit Rules Matter

Nothing is more frustrating than arriving at a race with your wetsuit packed, only to find the water temperature means it’s either banned or compulsory. Different race series operate under different temperature thresholds — and the rules for elite athletes often differ from those for age-groupers. Here’s everything you need to know before race day.

World Triathlon (WTCS) Rules

World Triathlon governs all WTCS, Olympic Games, and World Cup races. The current temperature rules are:

  • Below 20°C (68°F): Wetsuits permitted for elite athletes
  • 20°C–22°C (68°F–71.6°F): Wetsuit optional for elites; age-groupers may wear wetsuits at the race director’s discretion
  • Above 22°C (71.6°F): Wetsuits prohibited in competition
  • Below 16°C (60.8°F): Race may be shortened or cancelled on safety grounds

Water temperature is measured officially on race morning, typically at swim entry depth (1.2m). Even if the forecast suggested one temperature, the official measurement overrides all pre-race expectations.

IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 Rules

IRONMAN uses a slightly different set of thresholds that apply to all athletes — pro and age-group:

  • Below 24.5°C (76.1°F): Wetsuits permitted (and common in UK events)
  • 24.5°C–31.5°C (76.1°F–88.7°F): Wetsuit optional — athletes can wear one but will not be eligible for age-group awards if they do
  • Above 31.5°C (88.7°F): Wetsuits prohibited

The key difference from World Triathlon rules: IRONMAN’s “optional” zone is much warmer. In typical UK summer conditions, wetsuits are permitted for virtually all IRONMAN events in Britain.

British Triathlon Rules

British Triathlon follows rules closely aligned with World Triathlon for elite competition, but has specific guidance for domestic age-group and club racing:

  • Below 22°C: Wetsuits strongly recommended for age-groupers
  • 22°C–24°C: Wetsuit optional at race director’s discretion
  • Above 24°C: Wetsuits typically prohibited
  • Below 11°C: Open water racing may be cancelled for safety

T100 Series Rules

The T100 series follows World Triathlon temperature rules. However, as T100 races typically take place in warmer locations (Singapore, San Francisco, Dubai), wetsuits are frequently prohibited. Athletes should check the specific race briefing closer to race day.

Practical Tips for Race Day

  • Always bring your wetsuit even if conditions look warm — water temperature can be cooler than expected, especially in early morning
  • Check the official race briefing (usually emailed 48 hours before the race) for the final wetsuit ruling
  • If wetsuits are optional, consider your swim fitness: a wetsuit typically adds 2–4% buoyancy benefit and provides warmth — for most age-groupers it’s worth wearing in borderline conditions
  • In a non-wetsuit swim, wear a swimskin or race-legal trisuit for minimal drag
  • Open water practice without a wetsuit in the weeks before a non-wetsuit race is strongly advised — the feel of swimming without buoyancy assistance is noticeably different
