WTCS Samarkand 2026 Race Preview: The Season Finally Begins

Samarkand, Uzbekistan steps up to host the first round of the 2026 World Triathlon Championship Series on 26 April, following the postponement of the Abu Dhabi opener. The historic Silk Road city makes its WTCS debut having previously hosted World Cup events in 2024 and 2025, and it delivers a flat, fast and hot course that should produce quick times.

Course Overview

The Samarkand course is built around the city’s purpose-built rowing lake, which provides a protected 1500m swim free from open-water chop. Athletes then complete a six-lap bike circuit around the lake perimeter before a four-lap run finish. Temperatures in the high twenties Celsius with minimal shade make this a demanding test of heat management and hydration.

  • Swim: 1500m in the purpose-built rowing lake — flat water, minimal current
  • Bike: 40km, six laps around the lake perimeter — flat and fast, ideal for strong cyclists
  • Run: 10km, four laps — exposed course with high temperatures expected
  • Conditions: High 20s Celsius, minimal shade — heat management is critical

Key Athletes to Watch

Men’s field: Reigning world champion Matthew Hauser (AUS) arrives with the number one target on his back. Alex Yee (GBR) and Hayden Wilde (NZL) are the most likely challengers. Spanish rising star David Cantero showed his speed here in 2024, running a remarkable 30:19 10km on this course. With LA28 qualification points now counting from this race, every athlete will be treating it as a season-defining event.

Women’s field: Legendary American Gwen Jorgensen has confirmed she is targeting Samarkand — the race falls on her 40th birthday. Defending WTCS champion Cassandre Beaugrand (FRA) heads the field on current form, but the flat, fast course could suit the likes of Flora Duffy (BER) and Beth Potter (GBR).

Why This Race Matters

With Abu Dhabi postponed, Samarkand carries extra significance as the first race where LA28 Olympic qualification points are at stake. Athletes who miss this race lose ground to competitors early in the season. For British fans, Alex Yee and Beth Potter will be key to watch given Team GB’s strong LA28 ambitions.
