World Triathlon Cup Lanzarote 2026: Start List, Athletes and Race Preview
The Canary Islands host their first-ever World Triathlon Cup this weekend as Lanzarote makes its debut on the 2026 World Cup calendar. Racing takes place on Saturday 14 March in Costa Teguise, with the women’s race starting at 16:00 local time. With the WTCS season opener in Abu Dhabi postponed due to the ongoing Iran conflict, this World Cup has taken on added significance as athletes seek early competitive miles before Samarkand on April 26.
The Course
Lanzarote’s volcanic landscape makes for a visually spectacular — and physiologically demanding — race backdrop. The sprint format covers 750m swim, 20km bike, and 5km run through Costa Teguise’s coastal roads. The bike course features undulating terrain with short punchy climbs typical of the island’s lava fields. Expect warm conditions and cross-winds on the exposed sections of the bike leg.
Women’s Start List
The women’s field is headlined by Georgia Taylor-Brown (GBR), the most decorated female Olympic triathlete of all time, who is targeting early season form ahead of the LA28 qualification season. Jeanne Lehair (LUX) leads the field rankings after a breakthrough 2025 that included her first WTCS victory. Also racing is Sophie Evans (GBR), formerly Sophie Coldwell, making her return to international competition following the birth of her first child — a story to watch. Hungarian Fanni Szalai makes her World Cup debut after finishing runner-up at the World Junior Championships.
Men’s Start List
The men’s race features Dorian Coninx (FRA), the 2023 World Champion, who will be pushing hard for a strong early season result. Spain’s David Cantero, the 2024 U23 World Champion and WTCS Grand Final silver medallist in Wollongong, races on home soil (Canary Islands) which should provide extra motivation. Tim Hellwig (GER), a multiple World Cup winner, rounds out a strong European contingent.
How to Watch
The race will be streamed live and free on TriathlonLive.tv. Women’s race start: 16:00 local time (15:00 GMT). Men’s race follows approximately 90 minutes after the women’s finish. Full start lists are available on World Triathlon’s website at triathlon.org.
Context: 2026 LA28 Qualification
The 2026 WTCS season is the first year of the LA28 Olympic qualification cycle. With Abu Dhabi postponed, athletes who missed an early qualification points opportunity will be keen to accumulate points wherever possible — including at World Cup level. This gives Lanzarote extra stakes beyond its World Cup status. Every point counts in what will be a fiercely competitive qualification period running through to mid-2028.
