IRONMAN New Zealand 2026: Race Preview, Course Guide and Contenders
The 2026 IRONMAN Pro Series gets underway on 7 March in Taupō with one of the deepest professional fields ever assembled at IRONMAN New Zealand. With a $125,000 prize purse, 5,000 Pro Series points, and four Kona qualifying slots per gender, the stakes couldn’t be higher as the season-long title race begins in New Zealand’s spectacular volcanic lake district.
The Course
The ANZCO Foods IRONMAN New Zealand takes place entirely around Lake Taupō — a 2.4-mile (3.86km) swim in the crystal-clear waters of the lake, a 112-mile (180km) bike course that takes athletes through geothermal landscapes and rolling farmland, and a 26.2-mile (42.2km) run along the lake foreshore and through the streets of Taupō town. The bike course features around 1,800m of cumulative elevation gain — challenging but raceable for well-prepared athletes.
The Pro Men’s Race
2025 IRONMAN Pro Series champion Kristian Blummenfelt lines up as the favourite to claim the series-opening victory. The Norwegian powerhouse is renowned for his ability to run down competitors off the bike, and his marathon pace at full-distance IRONMAN distance is among the fastest in the world.
Defending Taupō champion Mike Phillips will be looking to protect his title on home territory. Phillips holds the course record of 7:45:47 set in 2025, and his tactical racing on the New Zealand terrain gives him a significant advantage over international visitors unfamiliar with the roads. Other contenders include Fenella Langridge’s husband and fellow British pro, and a deep field of 40+ professionals from 15 nations.
The Pro Women’s Race
2025 Pro Series champion Kat Matthews heads the women’s field with defending winner Regan Hollioake alongside her at the start. Matthews won the overall Pro Series title in 2025 and will be determined to start her title defence on the front foot. The field also includes Fenella Langridge, Hannah Berry, Jocelyn McCauley, Steph Clutterbuck, and Tamara Jewett — making this one of the strongest women’s fields in Taupō history.
Age-Group Racing and Kona Slots
Over 2,600 age-group athletes from around the world will race alongside the professionals, with the top finishers in each division earning coveted qualifying slots for the 2026 IRONMAN World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii on 10 October. For UK-based athletes, IRONMAN New Zealand has historically offered a good quota of British roll-down slots due to its strong entry from the UK.
What This Means for the Pro Series
The 2026 IRONMAN Pro Series runs through to the World Championship in Kona, with the series champion determined by accumulated points across multiple races. A win in Taupō carries significant weight — 5,000 points versus 3,000 for a runner-up finish — meaning whoever wins in New Zealand will start the season with a commanding lead. Watch for early-season tactical racing as athletes decide whether to chase points at every race or target peak performance for Kona.
