What the retailer lists

  • How it works: insert the checker’s pins into two chain links, press the swing-arm gauge and read the gauge window.
  • Range: reads wear from 0.25% to 1%.
  • Why it matters: Tredz notes that 1% wear is enough to affect chainrings and sprockets and let shifting performance deteriorate.
  • Compatibility: Tredz lists it as 10-speed compatible. We have not checked it against 11- or 12-speed chains, so confirm with Park Tool before buying for a newer groupset.

Where it fits a triathlete’s winter

The points below are our reading of the listed specs, not test results.

  • Wet-weather mileage. Winter riding in grit and rain wears chains faster, so a regular check is cheaper than replacing a worn cassette and chainrings.
  • Turbo season. Hours on the indoor trainer count towards chain wear too.
