Matcha Green Tea Energy Balls for Pre-Training Fuel

Why This Recipe Works for Athletes

Matcha green tea provides a uniquely clean caffeine hit — lower total caffeine than coffee but combined with L-theanine, an amino acid that promotes calm alertness without the jitteriness or caffeine crash. Paired with oats (slow-release carbohydrate), almond butter (healthy fat and protein), and honey (fast-acting glucose), these energy balls deliver sustained pre-training fuel. Make a batch of 12 on Sunday and keep them in the fridge for the week — grab two before morning sessions, no prep required.

Ingredients

  • 150g rolled oats
  • 2 tbsp matcha green tea powder (culinary grade)
  • 3 tbsp almond butter (or peanut butter)
  • 3 tbsp honey or maple syrup
  • 40g desiccated coconut
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds
  • 2–3 tbsp water (to bind)

Instructions

  1. Combine the oats, matcha powder, desiccated coconut and chia seeds in a large mixing bowl. Stir to mix the dry ingredients evenly.
  2. Add the almond butter and honey. Mix thoroughly — the mixture will be crumbly at this stage.
  3. Add water one tablespoon at a time, mixing after each addition, until the mixture comes together and holds when pressed in your hand.
  4. Roll into 12 equal balls, roughly the size of a large marble. Use wet hands if the mixture is sticky.
  5. Place on a tray lined with baking paper and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before eating. Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.

Nutrition Notes

Each ball (1 of 12) contains approximately 95 calories, 3g protein, 12g carbohydrates and 4g fat. Eat 2–3 balls around 60–90 minutes before a training session for optimal energy release. The matcha provides roughly 25–35mg caffeine per ball (depending on the brand) — equivalent to a quarter of a standard espresso — without the acidity of coffee, making it gentler on pre-training digestion. For a chocolate version, replace the matcha with 2 tablespoons of cacao powder.
