Continental Terra Speed Protection Review 2026: A Fast Gravel Tyre for Triathletes

A fast tyre for triathletes cross-training on gravel

If you’re building a gravel bike as a lower-impact alternative to road miles, tyre choice matters more than almost anything else on the build. The Continental Terra Speed Protection is aimed squarely at riders who want speed on hardpack and light gravel without giving up puncture protection — a sensible trade-off for triathletes who can’t afford a flat wrecking a training block.

Key specs

  • Compound — Continental’s BlackChili rubber, tuned for a balance of grip, rolling resistance and longevity on gravel
  • Casing — 180 TPI ProTection casing borrowed from Continental’s MTB range, giving roughly 30% more puncture protection than the previous generation while cutting weight by around 25%, per Continental’s own figures
  • Tread — A continuous, close-knit hexagonal pattern optimised for hardpack and smooth gravel rather than mud or loose terrain
  • Sizes — 650b in 35mm/40mm, and 700c in 35mm/40mm/45mm, in black, cream or tan sidewalls

How it performs

Cyclingnews and Gravel Cyclist both found it rolls fast and grips well on dry, predictable surfaces, staying puncture-free through testing on sharp gravel. The trade-off is looser, more varied terrain — this isn’t a mud tyre, and riders tackling technical off-road sections may want something more aggressive.
