ASICS Sonicblast 2 Review 2026: A Lighter Super-Trainer for Off-Season Miles

ASICS rolled the Sonicblast 2 out globally from 24 August 2026, with full availability from 1 September. It’s a daily-trainer “super shoe” — a nylon-plated, dual-foam trainer rather than a dedicated race shoe — and it lands right as most triathletes are shifting from race-specific sessions into higher-volume off-season running. We haven’t had one on foot for extended testing yet, so treat the verdict below as an early spec-based look rather than a worn-in review; we’ll update this once we’ve logged real miles in a pair.

Key Specs (Verified)

  • Price: £170 UK / $190 US (ASICS.com)
  • Weight: 242g (US men’s size 9) — around 14g lighter than the original Sonicblast
  • Stack height / drop: 46mm heel / 8mm drop
  • Midsole: dual-foam — FF BLAST MAX underfoot with a new FF TURBO SQUARED insert layer
  • Plate: redesigned forked ASTROPLATE, ASICS’ nylon plate for underfoot propulsion

What’s Changed From the First Sonicblast

The headline change is weight: ASICS has cut roughly 14g without dropping stack height, largely down to the reshaped ASTROPLATE and the new FF TURBO SQUARED foam layer sitting inside the existing FF BLAST MAX midsole. It sits in ASICS’s range as a max-cushion daily trainer with race-shoe DNA underfoot — closer in spirit to the Superblast 3 than to the carbon-plated Metaspeed line, and not built or marketed as a triathlon-specific shoe.

Is It Worth It for Triathletes?

For triathletes, this is an off-the-bike training shoe rather than a race pick — the 46mm stack and 8mm drop suit long, easy-paced off-season volume where cushioning and reduced impact matter more than raw speed. If you already run in the ASICS FF BLAST family (Superblast, Novablast) and want something plusher for base-building, it’s worth trying. If you’re after a dedicated triathlon race shoe, our best ASICS running shoes for triathlon roundup and the Metaspeed/Noosa Tri lines remain the better fit.

Price and Availability

The Sonicblast 2 is on sale now at £170 direct from ASICS UK. It isn’t in our Tredz/AWIN feed (running shoes aren’t part of that programme) and we haven’t found an Amazon UK listing yet — the link below goes straight to ASICS, and we’ll swap in an affiliate link as soon as one exists.

Buying Tips

  • Size true to your usual ASICS running shoe — no reports yet of the Sonicblast 2 running long or short versus the original.
  • This is a max-cushion trainer, not a race shoe — pair it with a firmer, more responsive shoe for race-pace sessions.
  • If budget is the deciding factor, the outgoing Sonicblast or the Novablast 5 will be discounted as this replaces the range-topper.
