Watermelon and Feta Salad for Hot Days
Why This Recipe Works for Athletes
Watermelon is around 92% water and carries a genuine dose of potassium, making it one of the most effective foods for topping up fluid and electrolytes lost through heavy summer sweating. Pair it with feta for a hit of sodium and protein, and this becomes far more than a side dish — it’s a legitimate post-heat-session recovery plate. Best eaten straight after a hot-weather ride or run, or alongside lunch on a high-heat training day.
Ingredients
- 500g watermelon, cubed and deseeded
- 100g feta, crumbled
- 1/2 cucumber, sliced
- Small handful fresh mint leaves, torn
- 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
- 1 lime, juiced
- Pinch of sea salt
Instructions
- Cube the watermelon and slice the cucumber, then arrange together on a plate or in a large bowl
- Scatter the crumbled feta evenly over the top
- Tear the mint leaves and sprinkle over the salad
- Drizzle with olive oil and fresh lime juice
- Finish with a small pinch of sea salt and serve immediately while the watermelon is cold
Nutrition Notes
A serving comes in at roughly 180-220 calories with a good hit of potassium and sodium — a genuinely useful rehydration combination rather than just a refreshing snack. For a higher-protein version after a long session, add a handful of grilled chicken or chickpeas. Dairy-free athletes can swap the feta for a plant-based feta alternative without losing much of the salty contrast that makes this work.
