Homemade Electrolyte Ice Lollies for Summer Training
Why This Recipe Works for Athletes
Homemade electrolyte ice lollies are one of the best recovery and pre-cooling tools for athletes training and racing in summer heat. They replace the sodium, potassium, and magnesium lost through sweat while providing fast carbohydrate — all in a format that cools your core temperature and is far easier to eat when appetite is suppressed after a hot run or ride. Make a batch on Sunday and use throughout the week on hot training days.
Ingredients
- 500ml coconut water (natural source of potassium)
- 250ml fresh watermelon juice or blended watermelon (approximately 300g watermelon)
- Juice of 1 lime
- 1 tablespoon honey or maple syrup
- Quarter teaspoon fine sea salt (provides sodium)
- Pinch of magnesium citrate powder (optional — supports muscle recovery)
Instructions
- Blend 300g of seedless watermelon until smooth. Strain through a fine sieve to remove pulp if you prefer a clearer lolly.
- Combine watermelon juice, coconut water, lime juice, honey, salt, and magnesium powder (if using) in a jug. Stir well until honey dissolves fully.
- Taste: the mixture should be lightly sweet with a detectable saltiness. Add an extra pinch of salt if needed — the salt is an important functional ingredient, not just flavour.
- Pour into ice lolly moulds (makes approximately 6 to 8 standard lollies) and insert sticks.
- Freeze for a minimum of 4 hours, ideally overnight. Run warm water over the mould for 10 seconds to release.
Nutrition Notes
Per lolly (based on 6 lollies per batch): approximately 45 to 55 calories, 11 to 13g carbohydrate, 120mg sodium, 280mg potassium. Consume 1 to 2 lollies within 20 minutes of finishing a hot training session as part of your recovery routine. They can also be used as pre-cooling before a race in warm conditions — eat 1 to 2 lollies in the 15 minutes before your race start to help lower core temperature. Store for up to 4 weeks in the freezer.
Prep time: 15 minutes + 4 hours freezing | Servings: 6 to 8 lollies
