Frozen Banana Nice Cream: The Athlete’s Post-Training Recovery Dessert
Why This Recipe Works for Athletes
Frozen banana nice cream is one of the most practical post-training recovery snacks an athlete can make. Bananas are rich in potassium, which helps counteract muscle cramps, and their natural sugars provide a fast carbohydrate hit to begin restoring glycogen within the 30-minute post-workout window. Unlike dairy ice cream, this version is light on fat and easy to digest — perfect after a hard session when your stomach is sensitive.
Ingredients
- 3 ripe bananas, peeled, sliced and frozen for at least 4 hours
- 2 tablespoons natural peanut butter or almond butter
- 1 tablespoon cocoa powder (optional)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Pinch of sea salt
- Toppings: dark chocolate chips, granola or sliced fresh banana
Instructions
- Remove frozen banana slices from the freezer and let them sit at room temperature for 5 minutes to soften slightly.
- Add banana slices to a food processor or high-powered blender.
- Blend on high for 60-90 seconds, scraping down the sides as needed, until the mixture is completely smooth and creamy.
- Add peanut butter, cocoa powder (if using), vanilla extract and sea salt. Blend for another 20 seconds to combine.
- Serve immediately for a soft-serve texture, or return to the freezer for 30 minutes for a firmer scoop. Top with your choice of dark chocolate chips, granola or fresh banana slices.
Nutrition Notes
Per serving (without toppings): approximately 220 calories, 4g protein, 42g carbohydrate, 6g fat. The peanut butter adds protein and healthy fats to slow carbohydrate absorption, helping to sustain energy levels after an intense session. For a higher protein version, blend in a scoop of vanilla protein powder with the bananas. Vegan and dairy-free as written.
