How to Choose Triathlon Wheel Depth: A Rim Depth Guide for Every Condition

Deeper wheels are faster in a straight line — but “faster” and “right for your race” aren’t always the same thing. Rim depth trades aero efficiency for crosswind stability and handling, and picking the wrong depth for the conditions can cost you more time fighting the bike than you gain from the aero benefit. Here’s how to think about it.

The Basic Trade-Off

A deeper rim smooths airflow around the wheel, reducing drag at speed. But that same deep sidewall acts like a sail in a crosswind — the deeper the rim, the more a gust pushes the wheel sideways, and the more you have to correct for it. On a calm, flat course that trade is easy: go as deep as you can afford. On an exposed, gusty course, too much depth becomes a handling liability rather than a free speed boost.

Rough Depth Guide

  • 30-40mm — an all-rounder depth for hilly or technical courses with exposed sections and gusty conditions; light enough to climb well, stable enough to descend confidently
  • 50-60mm — the sweet spot for most triathlon and 70.3 courses; a meaningful aero gain with handling most intermediate riders are comfortable with
  • 80mm+ and disc wheels — reserved for pancake-flat, sheltered courses in calm conditions; a rear disc in particular can become genuinely hard to control in a strong crosswind, which is why draft-legal mixed relay racing bans them outright alongside aero bars

Front vs Rear

The rear wheel is shielded by your body and legs, so it’s far less affected by crosswind than the front. This is why many riders run a shallower front wheel (or a spoked wheel) paired with a deeper rear, or a rear disc — you get most of the aero gain from the sheltered rear wheel while keeping the front wheel, which is what actually steers the bike, easier to control.

Matching Depth to the Day

  • Check the race-morning wind forecast, not just the average conditions for the region and season
  • If in doubt, drop down a depth on the front wheel rather than the rear — you lose less aero benefit and gain more stability where it matters most
  • Practice riding your race wheels in windy conditions before race day; the first time you feel a rim wheel get pushed sideways shouldn’t be mid-race
